NAGOYA CITY


Nagoya Castle
This is one of the most famous Japanese castles. Nagoya Castle was constructed under the orders of leyasu Tokugawa as an important base of the Edo Government along the Tokaido road. lt is popular for its beautiful cherry blossoms in the spring. The golden end tiles in the shape of the shachihoko (a mythical orca) are a well-known symbol of Nagoya.

Tokugawa Museum
With respect to the level and number of treasures displayed, the Tokugawa Museum is one of the foremost museums in Japan. Among the displays one can find daily items, weapons and furniture used by feudal lords from the Owari Tokugawa Family. Additionally, a corner of the museum is dedicated to the internationally famous picture scrolls of the Genji Monogatari (Tale of Genji).

Nagoya Dome
This multi-purpose stadium serves as the home ground of Nagoya's professional baseball team, the Chunichi Dragons and hosts other events as well. There is a special navigator system installed inside the dome to help guide visitors.

Noritake Craft Center
Visitors can take a tour of the Noritake production line and watch highly skilled artists create the world famous chinaware. Included in the tour is a gallery where elegant tableware is displayed. A gift shop also has many of the newest designs on hand for chinaware enthusiasts.

Higashiyama Zoo & Botanical Garden
The Zoo and Botanical Garden opened in 1937. Koalas from Australia thrill Zoo visitors while the Botanical Gardens offer a wide variety of seasonal flowers and vegitation throughout the year.

Center of the city; Hisaya-Odori Park
This is Nagoya's main downtown area where several department stores, office buildings and hotels stand side by side. Right in the middle of the downtown area is the lush green Odori Park, Japan's first broadcasting tower the "Nagoya TV Tower" and one of the biggest underground shopping malls in the country.







Nagoya Noh Theater
Noh plays are one example of traditional Samurai Culture from the Edo period. The Nagoya Noh Theater was constructed in 1997 in the southern section of the front gate to Nagoya Castle, in an attempt to promote traditional performances and culture.

Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology
The former head office and factory of the Toyota Textile Company was dedicated as a museum years ago. This is where the world famous Toyota group originally started. The museum aims to introduce manufacturing concepts and pass on the importance of research and inventions to the general public.

Atsuta Shrine
This is the second largest and most important Shinto shrine in Japan after the lse Shrine in Mie and Meiji Shrine (the third most important) in Tokyo. Each shrine is in charge of guarding a sacred object. One of these three sacred treasures is kept at Atsuta Shrine. The "Kusanagi Sword" (considered to be holy) is stored in a safe place. Additionally, in the Homotsuden (Treasury Storehouse), the "Nihonshoki" (a national treasure) and other important objects are also maintained.

IdcN (International Design Center Nagoya) Design Museum
The Tokai area plays an important role as a major center for the origin of handiwork and production. This museum focuses on the design aspect of handiwork and production. It displays many objects that gained recogition for the uniqueness of their design.

Nagoyako (Nagoya Port) Area
The Nagoya Port Garden Pier is a popular sightseeing spot, offering an aquarium, a maritime museum, a wide variety of shops and restaurants among other attractions. Visitors can also enjoy a short cruise inside the port which is located in the upper northern section of Ise Bay.
