MIE PREFECTURE




Mie Prefecture is located in the middle of Japan and allows for easy access to Kyoto and Osaka. More than one third of the prefecture is designated as a "Nature Park" and is blessed with beautiful scenery such as its rugged coastline. Because of the historical Ise Grand Shrine, the most important Japanese shrine, Mie has attracted many visitors since ancient times. With many resort and amusement facilities, Mie is also known as a modern sightseeing and resort district.


Matsusaka Beef

Matsusaka Beef is produced very carefully using a special method. This marbled beef is well received around the world as a top quality product.
Tekone Sushi (Ise Shima Area, Mie Prefecture)
Tekone Sushi is prepared by hand and is a speciality of the Ise Shima area. It was orginally a dish eaten by fishermen in which fresh bonito (a kind of fish) is cut up by hand, seasoned quickly with soy sauce and salt and then mixed into rice.
 
Matsusaka Cotton (Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture)
Matsusaka Cotton is characterized by its stripes and simple indigo textures. Visitors are welcome to try out weaving in the Hand-Weaving Center.
Ise Katagami (Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture)
Ise Katagami is a technique that dyes designs and patterns onto kimono cloth. Japanese paper is processed using persimmon juice and then patterns are cut out for use when the dyes are painted onto the cloth. In additon to this, the patterns may be used for picture cards, bookmarks and wall decorations.
