GIFU PREFECTURE

Gifu Prefecture is located in the middle of Japan and thus has no coastline. Thanks to an abundance of nature, including the Kiso, Nagara and Ibi Rivers and rolling mountains, Gifu is blessed with beautiful scenery ranging from 0 to 3000 meters above sea level. There are also many historical sites, hot-spring resorts and ski slopes that attract visitors all year round.

Houba Miso Bean Paste
(Hida Area)
A speciality originating in the Hida area, miso bean paste, green onions and other vegetables are placed on a dried Houba leaf, which is then grilled slowly on a brazier. Served with rice, miso soup and Japanese pickles, this is a satisfying but healthy meal.
Fuyugaki Persimmons
(Mino Area, Gifu Prefecture)
The big, sweet persimmons grown here are popular across the country. In addition to persimmons, "Kaki" in Japanese, apples and peaches are produced in Gifu Prefecture.

Ichii Ittou Sculptures
(Hida Area, Gifu Prefecture)
Only masters of woodwork are able to carve these scultures. Using centuries old aged yew (a type of wood aged for 150 to 500 years) each piece is carefully carved and chiseled by hand. As the wood ages it turns a beautiful, rich color.
Japanese Umbrellas
(Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture)
Japanese umbrellas have been produced in this area since the Edo period (1603-1867). Many people are attracted to its elegant form and high level of craftsmanship.
